Day 1
Session 1. Establishing a need for designing and developing great organizations.

  • Learn why some organizations consistently out perform others in their same industry. Is it by chance or by design and development?
  • Review the evolutionary thinking and research on the principles, tools and best practices of organization development.
  • Explore the power of establishing great design principles and critical success factors to guide and ensure a successful organization design.
  • Review the three key analysis tools for understanding an organization competitive landscape:
    o    1) environmental scan
    o    2) process / technical analysis
    o    3) culture / social analysis
  • Application exercise – Develop an initial set of principles and models to guide you as you think about your organization’s change and development.

Session 2. Learn how to develop the right organizational effectiveness model and culture for your organization.

  • Understand how to use the Organizational Systems Design (OSD) model to guide the development of theright organizational model and culture for you organization.
  • Learn about the power of differentiation and creating competitive advantage through uniqueness in culture, design and development.
  • Learn how to develop a powerful mission statement and                                                      set of principles to guide your organization’s development.
  • Learn the other key choices associated with an organization’s design and development.
  • Application exercise – Develop an organizational effectiveness model and culture for your organization.

Session 3. Learn how to develop a leadership brand with leadership performance models your organization that truly differentiates and creates a competitive advantage for an organization.

  • Review the research on the power of developing a leadership brand and performance  models for your organization.
  • Identify the key results and organizational capabilities needed to create a competitive advantage in your organizations environment.
    Identify what leadership capabilities are needed in your organization to compete  effectively in your environment and which are needed to create separation in your environment.
  • Review the best practices for assessing and developing these capabilities.
  • Application exercise – Develop a plan for developing a leadership brand with leadership performance models for your organization which aligns with it future  state vision.

Session 4. Learn the various plans on how to develop a transition plan for moving your organization from its current state to ideal future state.

  • Understand how to use the transition-planning model to guide the development of the organization from its current to its ideal future state.
  • Learn the principles and tools to identify your organization’s “future state”.
  • Explore the tools to analyze and determine your organizations “current state”.
  • Identify the key plans (activity plan, management plan, commitment plan, measurement plan and stabilization plan) associated with transitioning an organization from its “current state” to its “ideal future state”.
  • Application exercise – Develop a transition plan for your organization using these five various plans (activity plan, management plan, commitment plan, measurement plan and stabilization plan).

Day2
Session 1. Learn the three key tools for capturing the hearts and minds of those necessary to ensure a successful change process. Learn how to link employee engagement to the organizational development effort.

  • Discover how to utilize the “ignite” element of leadership that captures the hearts and minds of those key in each of the stakeholder groups.
  • Learn how to utilize the “involve” element of leadership that captures the hearts and minds of those key in each of the stakeholder groups.
  • Understand how to utilize the “unite” element of leadership that captures the hearts and minds of those key in each of those stakeholder groups.
  • Identify the key elements of employee engagement that have the biggest impact on the results of an organizational development effort.
  • Application exercise – Using the three tools (ignite, involve & unite) develop a plan for capturing hearts and minds in your organization.

Session 2. Learn the keys for understanding and facilitating change at the individual, team and organizational levels. Learn how to apply an effective change management processes and system in your organization.

  • Review the key research and findings on understanding change at the individual, team and organizational levels.
  • Discover how to utilize the stakeholder analysis tool to help ensure buy in and the capturing of the hearts and minds of those in each of the key stakeholder groups
  • Explore the various roles needed in a change management process and structure
  • Learn how to use the change management plan to build a case for change.
  • Explore the key elements of a communication plan and how best to utilize it for your organization’s change process.
  • Review the best practices associated with developing an employee engagement plan for your organizational development effort.
  • Application exercise – Using the Change Management Plan components complete a stakeholder analysis, case for change, communication plan and employee engagement plan for your organizational development effort.

Session 3. Learn how to develop a leadership brandwith leadership performance models your organization that truly differentiates and creates a competitive advantage for an organization.

  • Review the research on the power of developing a leadership brand and performance models for your organization.
  • Identify the key results and organizational capabilities needed to create a competitive advantage in your organizations environment.

Day 3

Session 1. Learn how to design the appropriate structure needed to support the design and development of your organization.

  • Study the principles and approach to designing and aligning around an organization’s competitive, competitive enabling, business essential and compliance work.
  • Learn the three levels / hierarchy of structure design for an organization.
  • Explore the best practices principles and methodologies for building high performance teams
  • Learn the five different stages of development and how to develop appropriate descriptors for each stage.
  • Learn how to assess the stage of development of your teams and develop approaches for moving from one stage to another with you teams in your organization.
  • Application exercise – Apply the theseteam principles and design methodology for your organization.

Session 2. Knowledge is the purest source of competitive advantage. How knowledge is managed is critical to the success of superior performing organizations

  • Identify the key performance requirements for the new organization design.
  • Determine the different types of knowledge necessary to deliver those performance requirements
  • Study the appropriate learning processes for the different types of knowledge required to achieve the performance requirements.
  • Examine the organizational design elements (e.g. communities of practice) needed to support the learning processes needed to develop the capabilities needed to achieve outstanding performance.
    Application exercise – identify the key roles needed to support the organization’s design and begin to develop a performance model for those roles

Session 3. Planning your back home organization development project

  • Review the eight key course content modules:
    1)    Building an organizational effectiveness model;
    2)    Assessing the gaps in organizational effectiveness;
    3)    Developing a Transition Plan;
    4)    Developing a change strategy and management plan; 5) Capturing Hearts and Minds;
    5)    Developing a Leadership Brand with Leadership Performance Models;
    6)    Design a proper team and organizational structure;
    7)    Competing on Knowledge.
  • Application exercise – Develop a project plan for your organizational development project.

About PAUL GUSTAVSON
Paul W. Gustavson is a leading management consultant specializing in strategy and organization design, business process improvement, leadership development, the design of high performance teams and work systems. In the early 70’s, he began an in-depth study of high performance teams and the systemic design of high commitment work systems. In 2012, he co-authored a few popular books, including: “Running into the Wind, Bronco Mendenhall, Five Strategies for Building Successful Teams,” “The Power of Living by Design” and ,in March of 2014, “A Team of Leaders, Empowering every member to take ownership,  Demonstrate Initiative and Deliver Results.”

Paul received his Master’s in Organizational Behavior in 1975 from Brigham Young University. He has served for over 22 years as a member of the Marriott School of Management’s OB/HR Advisory Board and as a past chair for 8 years.   In April 1999, he received the Marriott School of Management’s William G. Dyer Distinguished Alumni Award for his contribution in the field of strategy and organization design, leadership development, knowledge management and change management.  In 1999 he was selected as a member of Work in America’s National Advisory Council focusing on identifying best practices in creating and sustaining high performance teams.

Prior to establishing Organization Planning & Design Inc. in 1984 Paul held Human Resource and Organization Development Management positions for Standard Oil of Indiana, Zilog and Cygnet Technologies Inc. in the energy and high technology industries. He has over 37 years of consulting, research and hands on experience as an internal and an external consultant as well as a Director of Human Resources. He has been involved with more than 50 start-ups, joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions during this period of time. In 2003 he co-founded Sand hill Partners www.sandhillpartners.com to leverage his startup knowledge with those of his partners.

Since founding OPD 1984, Paul’s consulting experience has included work in the area of strategy and organization design, business process design and improvement,  management, team development and change management at a number of companies, such as: Amazon, American Express, American Transtech, Amoco, AT&T, Blue Cross Blue Shield, BP, BHP of Australia, Bristol Myers Squibb, Colgate Palmolive, Exxon, GE. Ebay, and NASA. Several of Paul’s clients, including I/NTek, American Transtech, the Geon Company, AT&T Credit Corp., and Veterans Administration have been recognized nationally and featured on Work in America’s national tour of outstanding organizations. The work at  Amerada Hess received the 2000 Computerworld Smithsonian Award “A Search for New Heroes”.

He has been the keynote speaker at numerous conferences including: American Society of Training & Developments National Conferences, OD Network’s National Conference, The Ecology of Work Conferences, U.S. Navy’s Science Technology and Engineering Conference, BYU Marriott School’s Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Conferences, BYU Management Society’s Conferences, National Conference of Organization Designers. Paul’s work has been featured in over 50 books, company magazines and periodicals, including Business Week, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Deseret News, Fast Company and Fortune magazine.
