Description  
Construction of generation plants, transmission and distribution of electrical energy systems is a costly business. At both levels of national grid systems and local industrial plants, two important aspects are at the heart of this strategic industry. These are the reliability of energy delivery to meet customers’ demands and safe operation. At different stages of energy processing i.e. at the generation, transmission and energy delivery stage, protection of personnel and equipment is of prime importance. To achieve these goals, protection schemes are to be employed. The philosophy adopted in any protection scheme is to clear faults with a minimum system disruption, at a high speed, and in a simple and economical way. The course deals with different types of protection schemes used in large networks and those adopted in industrial plants. It describes some of the important components such as relays, comparators and other protective gears, and techniques and calculations used for their settings. The course also reflects on recent development and what are new in this important field of electricity industry.

DESKRIPSI
Petir adalah sebuah cahaya yang terang benderang yang dihasilkan oleh tenaga listrik alam yang terjadi di antara awan-awan ataupun dari awan ke tanah. Kejadian ini sering kali terjadi apabila cuaca sedang mendung maupun terjadinya badai. Penyebab dari kerusakan bangunan yang diakibatkan oleh sambaran petir terutama adalah dari besar arus listrik yang dibawa oleh petir dan kecuraman arus listrik yang dibawa oleh petir, yang mana besarnya arus listrik dapat mencapai 200 kA. Kegagalan untuk melindungi kondisi kritis dan strategis seperti kilang, minyak & gas plant, proses petrokimia tanaman, bangunan, dll dapat menyebabkan kehilangan besar dalam produktivitas dan merugikan pendapatan. Kerusakan yang ditimbulkan dapat berupa kerusakan thermis seperti terbakar pada bagian yang tersambar, bisa juga kerusakan mekanis, seperti atap bangunan yang runtuh, bangunan yang retak dan lain sebagainya. Bahan bangunan yang paling parah bila terkena sambaran petir adalah yang bersifat kering, isolasi maupun semi isolasi, dan sangat mungkin mengakibatkan kerusakan lingkungan serta berakibat fatal bagi manusia hingga menyebabkan kematian.

Instalasi Penangkal Petir adalah suatu sistem dengan komponen dan peralatan yang secara keseluruhan berfungsi untuk menangkap petir dan menyalurkannya ke tanah. Sistem ini harus dipasang sedemikian rupa sehingga semua bagian dari bangunan beserta isinya atau benda yang dilindunginya terhindar dari bahaya sambaran arus petir baik sambaran arus petir secara langsung maupun sambaran arus petir secara tidak langsung. Komponen dari penangkal petir yang nantinya perlu diadakan pengecekan dan perawatan.

BACKGROUND
Distributed Control Systems (DCS) made its first entry in the seventies. Cheap microprocessors made the possibility to distribute control systems across the entire plant. Each controller control a limited part of the plant and each controller communicate to each other using a proprietary communication protocol. This is of course making the system becomes more configurable. DCS uses pre-programmed modules which are available to execute simple and more complex process control tasks. During the years that followed, DCS systems were used throughout the most diverse process industries in both continuous and batch applications. DCS applications in these different control environments made them increasingly mature, hundreds of configurable modules for every possible control problem were developed and stored in the system library. Using DCS, process controllers were able to handle tens, hundreds even thousand of control loops without jeopardizing the reliability of the complete control systems.
